STEPHEN FRANCIS VASTA
STEPHEN FRANCIS VASTA, a native New Yorker, has been active for twenty years
as a conductor, coach, pianist and harpsichordist. He has played and conducted
operas for companies including Indianapolis Opera, Berkshire Opera, and Metro
Lyric Opera, and has appeared as accompanist at Weill Recital Hall and at the
Smithsonian Institution. Equally at ease in musical theater, he has played
Off-Broadway for Oh, Coward! and conducted at Alabama Shakespeare Festival,
Westchester Broadway Theatre and Cape Playhouse.
Active as a music journalist since 1993, Mr. Vasta contributed surveys of
symphonies by Mahler, Bruckner, Shostakovich and Vaughan Williams to Stereophile's
"Building a Library" feature. Currently he is a Contributing Editor to Listener
magazine, and his record reviews, feature articles, and interviews appear
regularly in Opera News.
