RITA STREICH -- Arias and Waltzes
Deutsche Grammophon "Originals" DG 457 729 (M) (ADD) TT: 74:33

(THIS ALBUM HAS BEEN DELETED)

This extraordinary issue in DG's "Originals" series offers a cross-section of recordings by coloratura soprano Rita Streich (1920-1987), all dating from the mid-to-late '50s, with many performances appearing on CD for the first time. I doubt there could be more perfect coloratura singing than what is heard in Saint-Saëns' The Nightingale and the Rose. Streich was chosen by Karajan to sing Zerbinetta in his recording of Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos, a performance that set the standard for the role. Streich aficionados will want her two twin-CD sets on DG, one devoted to lieder (437 680), the other to arias and waltzes (435 748), including eight selections heard on this new "Originals" CD. But nine selections here are new to CD, making this issue essential for Streich fans.
