Two more major budget-priced multi-disk sets from RCA Red Seal
joining previously issued albums featuring Glenn Gould, Igor Stravinsky,
Vladimir Horowitz, Leonard Bernstein, Bruno Walter, and George Szell
(see REVIEW). As with the other releases in
the series, each disk contains what was on the original recording—so
some CDs are
rather
short in playing time. We do have the original program notes and
covers, a tinge of nostalgia for many collectors, and the remasterings
are of the highest quality. One might think that Perlman's Tchaikovsky
concerto was his first of that music; it is not—just a few months
before this recording was made in December 1967, Perlman recorded the
concerto for the Reader's Digest with the London Symphony
conducted by Alfred Wallenstein (available on Chesky). All of the Heifetz
and Perlman recordings have been issued before and many of the earlier
releases are still in the catalog at a higher price. Self-recommending!
All of these 10-CD sets are advertised as "limited editions." I'm not
sure just what that means, but if you are interested, get them now.
