Here is a welcome reissue! RCA these six disks are from their legendary Classic Film Score series. For the complete story on this and complete listings of contents, check the feature on this site CLASSIC FILM SCORES. Most of these disks were deleted and we are indebted to ArkivMusik for their enterprise in reissuing them on special order. This new series of reissues is of particular importance as the remastering engineer, Maria Triana, has returned to original analog stereo tapes—previous versions were in artifically-produced Dolby Surround. And the new versions sound wonderful. Gerhardt's magnificent concept of movie music, and the stunning playing by the National Philharmonic, are beautifully conveyed by the rich sonics. Program notes from original LP issues are included as is the cover, although new graphics are on CD booklets. And these are mid-price—and RCA has indicated in March 2011 there will be another batch. If you don't know these recordings, you are missing definitive performances of the best of movie music. Apparently these reissues indicate RCA will not release on CD Gerhardt's recoupling of the entire series which would have resulted in fewer but better filled CDs, discussed on our feature about the series. But let us rejoice in what we have. It is odd that producers elected not to have separate tracks for the six sections of Lost Horizon, although eleven tracks are provided for Gone With the Wind. Collectors surely will wish to have these CD issues from the original analog masters.
