Arthur Fiedler (1894-1979) played in the Boston Symphony ( violinist,
violist, pianist, organist, and percussionist) and in 1929 began the
Esplanade summer concerts. He conducted the Boston Pops Orchestra (made
up primarily of players from the Boston Symphony) for five decades leading
thousands of concerts mostly of lighter repertory but with many bows
to the classics. For many years Fiedler and the Pops recorded for RCA,
but in 1971 began a liason with Deutsche Grammophon that continued until
1979. For DGG they recorded many of their past hits and now we have this
splendid set of five double-disk albums with each CD filled to maximum
capacity containing about 160 works ranging from Bach to the latest pop/movie
tunes of the
time.
A
Fiedler
concert
was never a dull affair, and the excitement he always produced in his
performances is always apparent. No engineering credits are given, but
sonic quality is uniformly superb and beautifully captures the rich acoustics
of Boston's Symphony Hall where all of the recordings were made. For
many collectors these recordings will bring back many memories, and hats
off to DGG for making them available at modest price.
