MICHAEL GIELEN EDITION - VOLUME IV
German conductor Michael Gielen (b. 1927) is one of the most respected masters of the baton. He held a number of important European positions both in the concert hall and opera house. Since 1969 he has been closely associated with the Southwest German Radio Symphony. He also performed often with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony. Gielen always focused on avant garde music and conducted many major premieres. For health reasons (a slipped disk) he retired from conducting in 2014. To honor this legendary conductor, SWR and Hänsslerr have released many of his live performances, and here we have Volume IV in the SWR series. There are nine CDS of live performances recorded from 1968 - 2014 mostly with the SWR orchestra .Previous releases have included much standard repertory and here we have some more unusual fare as well as concert favorites. This site has praised many of his previous releases. The two major works are Schumann's complete music for Faust, and the Berlioz Requiem.
The live recordings are of high quality. A 48-page booklet provides detailed performance information. This is a valuable set for collectors.
