Saint-Saëns wrote some magnificent music, particularly his fourth and fiufth piano concertos, the third violin concerto, symphonic poers and Symphony No. 3. This new SACD offers his justly neglected Roma Symphony," an early work composed in 1856. It has four movements, leasing almost 40 minutes, and although well-crafted, it shows little of the imagination and grandeur of his later works. It was virtually forgotten until a revival in 1974. The famous Symphony No.3 has always been an audience favorite and there are numerous recordings, many reviewed on this site. Rrecently praised was an Epoch quadraphonic issue of the 1964 RCA recording with E. Power Biggs, Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra (REVIEW). This new SACD features organist Thierry Escaich with the Liège Royal Philharmomiic Orchestra conduced by Jean-Jaqques Kantorow. Recordings were made in 2020 in Salle Philharmonic Liege. Audio is not up to BIS's usual standard; percussion is blurred, and the organ is too small. No sonic display here, unfortunately. This disk will interest only those who which to hear this famous composer's earliest symphony.

Long-time collectors will remember excitement in when Vanguard issued several LPs bf Canteloube's enchanting Songs of the Auvergne sung by Natania Davrath. This site praised an important earlier recording with young soprano Lucie Daulene and the composer at the piano, a fascinating story indeed (REVIEW). There have been many recordings since then and now we have this splendid SACD featuring English soprano Carolyn Sampson who has made a number oif recordings for BIS, many praised on this site. She sings 25 of these delightful miniatures including of course, the famious Bailiero. She is given rich accompaniment by the fine Tapioa orchestra directed by Pasxal Rophé. The recording was made March 2020 in Finland's Tapiola Hall, and the mulri-channel audio is rich. Compete texts and translations are provided A major release!
