Manfred Honeck has been Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony since 2008 and already has made a number of superb recordings with them. This site has praised many of these minding works of Bruckner, Strauss, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. They also have recorded Beethoven's Symphonies 3, 5 an 7. Now they continue their Beethoven series with this magnificent performance of the mighty Symphony No. 9 recorded during live performance June 6-9. 2019 in Pittsburgh's Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts. There are well over 200 recordings of Beethoven's masterpiece; most major conductors have recorded it, including legendary performances by Karajan, Toscanini, Furtwängler, and Mengelberg. Arkivmusic lists more than a dozen SACD releases of this symphony aktalthough two of them (Furtwängler / Karajan) are not multi-channel. Among the most impressive SACDs are those by Osmo Vänska and the Minnesota Orchestra and Robert Trevino with the Malmo Orchestra (REVIEW). And I would not like to be without the Kurt Masur / Leipzig Gewandhaus recordings made 1972-1974, original muli-track recordings now reissued on Pentatone (REVIEW).This new Pittsburgh recording is surely among the best. First-class soloists, fine chorus and the Pittsburgh Symphony in virtuoso form. Extensive program notes by Honeck are an added plus and complete texts and translations are included. Producer Dirk Sbotka and engineer Mark Donahue have provided a splendid, satisfying aural picture Excellent in every way!

BIS is doing their part to make available music of Swedish composer Allan Pettersson (1911 - 1980). This site has mentioned recordings of his Violin Concerto No.2 and Symphony No. 17 (REVIEW), Symphony No. 7 (REVIEW), Symphony No. 6 (REVIEW), and Symphony No. 14 (REVIEW). Symphony No. 12 composed 1973-1974 is his setting of a series of poems by Chilean poet and politician Pablo Neruda (1904-1973). These are focused on man's inhumanity to man and oppression of the underprivileged. The text is Swedish. There are nine sections: The Dead in the Square, The Massacres, The Men of the Nitrate,. Death, How the Flags were Born O Call Call on Them, The Enemies, Here they Are, and Always. The choral writing is very intricate, magnificently sung by the two Swedish choruses. Both appeared in the other recording of this demanding work conducted by Manfred Honeck, included in the set of Pettersson symphonies s issued on the CPO label (777247). This new recording was made March 2019 and January 2020 at at the Louis de Geer Concert Hall, Norrkoping, Sweden, and the BIS engineers have produced a very realistic well-balanced sonic picture. Complete texts and translations are provided. This is a remarkable choral masterpiece that deserves attention.

AMAVI is a disk of music written by English composer and organist Michael East (1560 -1648). The viol, sometimes called vioia da gamba, is an instrument of the Renaissance and baroque periods, typically six-stringed, held vertically and played with a bow.The viol consort was very popular during East's time and he wrote profusely for this ensemble. Here we have 18 of his brief fantasies, and one in the same style by Jill Jarman (b. 1959). Performances are by the seven members of the vocal group Fieri Consort, and the six-member Chelys Consort of Viols. Recordings were made August 2018 in England's Girton College Chapel, Cambridge and the BIS engineers have captured the intimate sounds of the performers to perfection.
