This site has praised many recordings of music by leading Finnish composer Kalevi Aho including his Symphony No. 12 and "Luosto Symphony" (REVIEW) , recently a disk of featuring the oboe (REVIEW), and two wind quintets (REVIEW). This new disk features chamber music as listed above. Of particular interest is In Memoriam, composed for violinist John Storgards (also a superb conductor) to play in a solo violin recital in 2009 when Nordgren, who originally was o compose the piece, died. Also intriguing is the large-scale Piano Sonata No. 2 written in 2016, and based on Beethoven's Hammerklavier sonata. Performers are Samuli Peltonen, cellist, Jaakko Kuusisto to and Pekka Kuusisto, violinists, and Sonja Fräki, pianist (for whom the sonata was written). Program notes are by the composer. Recordings were made in Finland's Kalevi Aho Hall, and the multi-channel audio is excellent. These are important additions to the Aho catalog. issue!

The Chiaroscuro Quartet made their first appearance on BIS with acclaimed recordings of Joseph Haydn's Sun Quartets, Op. 20 (REVIEW). the fine Chiaroscuros return to Haydn, it is with the first three of his last complete set of quartets. Haydn was 64 when he began writing these in 1796 commissioned by Haydn's friend Count Joseph Erdody. The six Op. 76 quartets are Haydn at his best combining the solemn and majestic with light-hearted interludes. Detailed CD program notes by Richard Wigmore describe each quartet in detail. The Chiaroscuro quartet consists of Alina UI Bagimova and Pablo Hermán Benedí, violins; Emilie Hörnlund, viola and Claire Thirion, cello. Their assured performances were recorded December 2017 i Germany's Sendesaal, Bremen, and the BIS engineers have provided a totally satisfying audio picture. We look forward to volume two in this series.
