Jorgen Van Rijen is principal trombone with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and appears frequently as soloist with major orchestras. Claudio Abbado chose him to be principal trombone of the Lucerne Festival Ochestra, and you can see him perform on many of their videos. Rijen champions contemporary works for his instrument, and three of them are on his splendid SACD.

MacMillan's Trombone Concerto is dedicated to Rijen who gave the premiere April 20th, 2017, and that is what is heard here. The composer states is is based o a "ghostly" theme of seven notes and three pitches. Program notes state the work is in a single movement, but there are actually three sections, tracked separately. Theo Verbey's Lied is a musical settings based on well-known poems. It was premiered in Amsterdam september 18, 2007, and that is the performance herd here. This was released several years ago a part of the important Volume 7 of the RCOA Anthology, and it also can be found on Volume I in he Orchestra's Horizon series

Berio's Solo for Trombone and Orchestra was composed in 1999 for Christian Lindberg revised the following year. It almost seems to be an adversarial situation between soloist and orchestra, and technically it is a major challenge for all performers. All of the music on this fine release is worthy of attention, with Rijen's magnificent playing, and the recordings all made by Radio Netherland, are superb. Don't miss this terrific release!

Hakan Hardenberger is one of today's leading masters of the trumpet. He has appeared extensively with orchestras and in concert and made numerous recordings mostly of relatively standard repertory. Always of an adventurous nature, he looks for new repertory, and he surely found it with works heard on this new disk. Three women composers are featured, all respected for their academic achievements. Betsy Jolas (b. 1926) completed Histoiries varies in 2015 and it was premiered the following year by Hardenberger, to whom it is dedicated. Sally Beamish (b. 1956) is a violist as well as a composer and has written concertos for wel-known artists Her Trumpet Concerto was inspired by Italo Calvino's book Invisible Cities which reflects on aspects of city life—at several points in this work we hear police sirens.Olga Neuwirth (b. b 1968) was fascinated by the sound of the trumpet, and performed as a jazz trumpeter until a jaw injury made it impossible for her to play. The Trumpet concerto is subtitled ...miramomondo multiple was composed in 2006. It has been called a confrontation between the trumpet nd a huge orchestra. refers to "a multiplicity of perspective when regarding the world". I'm not sure just what that mens. The premiere was at the Salzburg Festival in 2006 with Pierre Boulez and the Vienna Philharmonic, with Hardenberger as soloist. There are profuse program notes about each work on this SACD attempting to explain the meaning of each, but I find little of lasting value here. Often all three works sound and often we hear huge interludes of dissonant smashing chords. We may presume these performances are definitive, and strong accompaniment is provided by the two orchestras conducted by Martyn Brabbins. Splendid audio as usual from BIS, but there is nothing on this disk that I would choose to hear again no matter how well played.

Vadim Gluzman has already made many superb recordings for BIS including concertos of Brahms, Glazounov, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky and Bruch. On his latest release he returns to Russian repertory featuring the famous Tchaikovsky Piano Trio and the lesser-known Piano Trio written in 1952 by Armenian composer Arno Babajamian, which continues the rich romantic Russian tradition. Then, as a sparkling encore, we hear the sparkling brief Tango from, Schnittke's opera Life with an Idiot as arranged for trio by pianist Yevgeny Sudbin.This is a collaboration of three major artists. The recordings were made December 2017 in Bremen's Sendesaal, and the sonic picture is rich and full. An outstanding issue!.
