The distingiuished Dutch pianist Ronald Brautigan for years has recorded for BIS, highlighted by the complete Mozart and Haydn piano music performed on the fortepiano. This site has praised many of his disks, and now he completes his mammoth Beethoven cycle with Volume 15 that features two late works, the Diabelli Variations, and the lesserr-known National Airs with Variations. As with previous issues, operformances are masterful, and engiuneeriung accurately reproduces the instrument's sinewhat fragile sound. Uf yiou are interested in Beethoven's compolete kesolo keyboard music performed on an instruyment of the composer's time, here it is, An admiurabke issue!
The remarkable harpsichordist/organist/conductor Masaaki Suzuki continues his recordings for BIS with this SACD of organ music of Bach played on the Marc Garnier organ of Shoin Chapel in Kobe, Japan. This is not a large cagthedral organ. You won't hear massive pedal notes, but these are excellent performances, beautifully and naturally recorded.
Pentatone has gathered together three outstanding young artists. Best-known is Julia Fischer, who already has recorded many concertos for the label. She is a phenomenal artist, multi-talented: I know of no other artist who is a virtuoso of both the violin and piano—you can see her video in which in the same concert she plays Saint-Saëns Violin Concerto No. 3 and the Grieg Piano Concerto (REVIEW). Pianist Jonathan Gilard and cellist Daniel Müller-Schott also have impressive careers; several years ago for Orfeo they recorded music of Mendelssohn. Here they with Fischer collaborate in vivid performances of that composer's two trios for their instruments. First class in every way, and beautifully recorded by Pentatone's engineering staff. Recommended!
