BIS has given Chinese violinist Yu Siquiing (b. 1969) a golden display opportunity with this SACD of a wide range of violin works. Siquing has had a close relationship with Naxos and made a number of recordings for them including The Four Seasons, Mendelssohn concerto, and The Butterfly Lovers' Concerto, the latter also included on this new recording. Siquing displays formidable virtuosity in the showpieces and b beauty of tone as well in two other Chinese works. Orchestral accompaniments are rich, and all has been captured by the BIS engineers in natural, wide-spread sound. A fine issue!

Several months ago, this site mentioned a CD of music of Franz Liszt for violin and piano performed by Voytek Proniewicz with pianist Wojcieeh Waleczek (REVIEW) Now we have another disk of this repertory, this time recorded in super-natural multi-channel audio. All of this music is demanding for both soloists, challenges totally met by young Swedish violinist Ulf Wallin, at the start of what promises to be an extraordinary career. Technical difficulties do not daunt him, and his tone is consistently pure. He makes much of the display opportunities of the Grand Duo Concertante and the Hungarian Rhapsody. His associate is another superb Swedish artist, pianist Ronald Pontinen, who also has a distinguished career and made some memorable recordings. Comprehensive program notes were authored by Wallin. Another fine issuSACD from this important label.

This site recently praised a recording by Alexander Sitkovetsky of music of Martinu (REVIEW), and Panufnik (REV IEW). This superb violinist also is a member of a piano trio with his name, a group founded in 2007. Other players are Leonard Elschenbroich, cello, and pianist Wu Qian. Their first disk featured music of Dvorak, Smetana and Suk; their second disk offering the first two Mendelssohn piano trio. The third movement scherzi of both trios are tossed off with the greatest spirit and delicacy. BIS's audio is state-of-the-art. The only minor debit is the rather limited playing time.
