Volume II Pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja has played a major part on the international concert scene for many years, with many distinguished recordings to her credit—including the first two Tchaikovsky piano concertos recorded in 1994 with Kurt Masur and the New York Philharmonic. The two Mendelssohn piano concertos are far less demanding technically and she tosses them off with the greatest of ease in these live performances recorded in October 2005 in Vienna's Konzerthaus. Nine of the composer's Songs Without Words fill out this fine SACD, which offers splendidly natural sound. Ottavio Dantone's fine recordingof Vivaldi's L'Estro Armonico, twelve concertos for various combinations of strings, was issued several years ago on DVD Audio, and also is available in a four-disk set of music of the composer. Now we have this version of L'Estro Armonico on SACD. Beautiful, detailed spacious sound marks these recordings. It's unfortunate more music wasn't included on each disk. R.E.B. (June 2007)
