Three winners from Pentatone! Two are in their RQR series (Remastered Quadro Recordings), the organ recital recorded in two different locations in The Netherlands. The four Bach works were recorded in August 1970 in Our Lady's Church in Breda, Liszt's Variations in the Rotterdam concert hall De Doelen. The three Brahms piano quartets were recorded in La Chaux de Fonds Music Theater in Switzerland in June 1973. Ever since their original issue, these recordings have been acclaimed. They currently are available in a budget 2-CD on Philips in their Duo series (454017) which also contains the same composer's Trio for Piano and Strings in A, not included on the SACD edition—perhaps it wasn't recorded in RQR. All of these are original four-track recordings released now for the first time in this format, and all sound wonderful, as natural as music can sound, with perfect balances and a rich sonic picture. The third SACD of Mozart wind concertos was recorded in the warm acoustics of Waalse Kerk in Amsterdam September 20-22, 2005. The orchestra consists of players from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the sterling soloists are first desk players—need more be said? The sound here is 5 channel, with the soloists well balanced against the small orchestra.
