Rimsky-Korsakov composed 16 operas; Snow Maiden was the fourth. He always was fascinated by the forces of nature, reflected in Snow Maiden. This was written 1880 - 1881, premiered two years later. It is a Russian fairy that takes place in prehistoric times with a libretto by the composer.The various leading characters have their own leitmotifs, and folk dances often are featured. The convoluted story involves the beautiful Snow Maiden who is in love with Mizgir but their love is doomed. Subtitles in various languages help clarify the convoluted plot. She melts and he drowns himself in the lake. This performance features an outstanding cast with the Chorus and Orchestra of the Paris National Opera directed by Mikhail Tatarnikov.Sets and costumes,es are colorfil and brilliant.The performance dates from April 2017. This is a rare opportunity to see a superb performance of this neglercted opera. Video ane audio are outstanding. Recommended!
The Verona Festival for years has presented spectacular opera productions in their huge venue and many of these are available on DVD This site recently praised a spectacular performance of Verdi's Il trovatore recorded in 2019 (REVEW). Verona productions are on a grand scale with hundreds of dancers, singers and mass crowd resembles all cstyned,. Sets are massive, costumes elaborate. ¹his is opera on a grandiose scale indeed. Now we have this budget reissue of three earlier performances, Carmen from 2014. Nabucco from 2017 andThe Barber of Seville from 2018. Splendid performances all, with state-of-the-art video and audio.
Unfortunately this new issue is disappointing. No program notes are provided. Casts are not identified with their roles and there are no track listings!! If you wish to view the famous Va Pensiero Chorus from Nabucco you'll have to search for it (it is track 21 - the repeat of †he chorus is †track 22. This information not provided/. It would have been so easy for the producers to have included this vital information. Still, these amazing performances are well worth viewing, and the price is right.
